The film directed by Adhe Dharmastriya is a blend of horror and religious films set in local culture about Javanese beliefs related to death on an unlucky day.
According to Javanese belief, anyone who dies on that day is believed to be able to bring other family members to the afterlife. Tuesday Kliwon is also synonymous with strong mystical energy because the spirits are not calm and hold grudges for the surrounding people.
Synopsis of Almarhum
The film Almarhum focuses on Mr. Mulwanto (Rukman Rosadi) who died on Tuesday Kliwon. Some other people choose not to travel far, cut their hair, and hold weddings on Tuesday Kliwon. Therefore, Mr. Mulwanto's death on that day made Nuri's family members have to perform a ritual to calm his spirit and avoid bad events.
However, the ritual was strongly opposed by Mrs. Rahmi's eldest son, Wisesa, who works as a doctor. He chose to support his mother, who was still devastated by the death of her husband, rather than follow the ancient traditions of the surrounding people. Due to Wisesa's rational attitude, many mystical events have happened to Nuri and Yanda. Starting from strange noises at night, and sightings of mysterious figures, to nightmares he repeatedly experienced. These events led Wisesa to believe that there was something wrong with his father's death on Tuesday Kliwon.
They decided to find out the truth behind the myth by tracing their family history and the events experienced by their father during his lifetime. In their search, they meet an old shaman who claims to know the secret behind Mr. Mulwanto's death.
The shaman asked them to perform topo pendem, a ritual performed one night by immersing themselves to ask for forgiveness and safety as a form of sacrifice to the spirit. The ritual is also thought to be able to stop the anger of spirits who died on an unlucky day like his father.
Hearing the advice of the misguided shaman, Wisesa began to have a dilemma because the mystical beliefs of his family and the surrounding community had been contrary to science. The topo pendem ritual not only harms the people who perform it but also contradicts Islamic law.
Wisesa's two younger siblings prefer to perform the ritual to stop their father's anger so that he can rest in peace.
But who would have thought that in the middle of the procession, they would be terrorized by their father's spirit? The father was angered by the attitude of his two children who went against Islamic law and chose to stop them from the actions of the heretical shaman.
