From ITN Studios, presents a slasher horror film adapted from a classic children's cartoon character that has been turned into the Public Domain, titled Popeye's Revenge: Prepare For Sea Blood. Yes, this year there are many classic cartoon characters made into the Public Domain, including the spinach-loving sailor, Popeye the Sailor Man. In fact, there are not just one, but two horror films from dark interpretations of the spinach-eating sailor with an iron arm that was popular in the 1930s through Max Fleischer's cartoons. Which iconic character has found himself in the Public Domain.
If the horror film Popeye The Slayer Man tells the story of Popeye's terror with punches in a spinach canning factory, Popeye's Revenge by director William Stead tells the story of the Sailor Legend Popeye who haunts a group of council members as they intend to open a summer camp. In an official poster shared by the Bloody Discusting site, Steven Murphy is seen playing the beloved spinach-eating sailor who is now covered in blood holding an anchor. It seems that Popeye is ready to slaughter teenagers this time with nautical equipment such as fish hooks and anchors and so on.
Interestingly, Popeye's Revenge is not the only horror film that utilizes this iconic sailor character from the public domain. There is another project titled Popeye that is planned to be released in theaters in 2025 titled Popeye the Slayer Man. This film is directed by Robert Michael Ryan and is a collaboration between Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media. This film tells the story of a group of friends who dare to enter a long-abandoned spinach canning factory. They intend to make a documentary about the legend of Sailor Man, a figure who is said to haunt the factory and the surrounding dock area. However, they actually meet Popeye, who in this version is depicted as a cold-blooded killer with overflowing anger. One by one, they become victims of his ferocity.
For fans of gore films, the Red Band trailer that has been released is guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity. Starring Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, Steven McCormack, Angela Relucio, and Sarah Nicklin. The script was written by John Doolan, with additional contributions from Jeff Miller, Ryan, and Ryan's creative partner at Revelations, Cuyle Carvin. Jeff revealed that the gore effects in the film, supervised by R.J. Young, used old school techniques and were made practically without the help of CGI.
His brutal work is clearly visible in the trailer footage, where they show broken hands, torn scalps, crushed heads, deadly stomps, broken necks, and gushing blood. The film is part of a growing trend, where classic characters are transformed into darker and scarier versions. This trend has become increasingly popular thanks to the work of Rhys Frake-Waterfield who successfully brought a similar concept to life through the Poohniverse or Twisted Childhood Universe. With audiences still unable to get enough of horror films based on beloved (and public domain) cartoon characters, one of two slasher films based on Popeye the Sailor has arrived with a new trailer that turns the one-eyed spinach-eater into the latest slasher to hit the big screen.
