The beginning of 2026 was an exciting time for Indonesian horror film fans. Several Indonesian filmmakers presented new works that didn't rely solely on jump scares but also adapted local stories with a fresh approach. One title that caught the attention was Penunggu Rumah: Buto Ijo, a horror film inspired by the Timun Mas folk legend, with a modern twist and a dark, oppressive atmosphere. Depicting the figure of Buto Ijo, a familiar figure from childhood fairy tales, this film seeks to break that classic image. Rather than simply being a monster from a bedtime story, Buto Ijo is presented as a more realistic, mysterious, and meaningful symbol of terror. It's no wonder that from the moment its first trailer was released, the film immediately piqued audiences' curiosity. Synopsis of Abadi Nan Jaya
Abadi Nan Jaya is set in Wanirejo, a remote village near Yogyakarta, home to a family that owns a renowned herbal medicine business.
The village is home to a family that has owned a traditional herbal medicine business for generations, struggling to maintain their business amidst modern competition. Sadimin (Donny Damara), the head of the family, is trying to mix herbal medicine to create a revolutionary new formula. All of this was driven by his overwhelming ambition and obsession with success.
One day, he revealed he had successfully created a high-quality herbal medicine that he believed could increase sales and even change the world. The herbal medicine was codenamed "ANJ" and produced in batch 23A.
The herbal medicine apparently promised eternal youth, or immortality, to anyone who consumed it. This belief led Sadimin to decide to try his experimental herbal medicine himself. He soon began to experience the effects of the herbal medicine, but to an extreme degree.
He suffered severe convulsions, his skin slowly turned black and blistered, and he then behaved like a living corpse, attacking his own family members. Seeing this, the family members gathered at home panicked and tried to escape.
The patriarch's ambition to maintain his power not only caused a rift in the family but also caused a major problem that affected the entire village. An innovation for eternal youth actually triggered a zombie outbreak. No longer just a family problem, the situation also directly affected the lives of the residents of Wanirejo, many of whom were transformed into zombies.
In the midst of their efforts to save themselves, each remaining family member discovers a dark family secret behind their herbal medicine business.
The film stars Donny Damara, Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Dimas Anggara, Kiki Narendra, and Marthino Lio. Kimo directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Agasyah Karim and Khalid Kashogi.
Abadi Nan Jaya (The Elixir) will be Kim Stamboel's latest horror film, after directing Badarawuhi in the Dancer Village (2024), Sewu Dino (2023), Jailangkung: Sandekala and Ivanna (2022), and Ratu Ilmu Hitam (2019).
