The beginning of 2026 was an exciting time for Indonesian horror film fans. Several Indonesian filmmakers presented new works that didn't rely solely on jump scares but also adapted local stories with a fresh approach. One title that caught the attention was Penunggu Rumah: Buto Ijo, a horror film inspired by the Timun Mas folk legend, with a modern twist and a dark, oppressive atmosphere. Depicting the figure of Buto Ijo, a familiar figure from childhood fairy tales, this film seeks to break that classic image. Rather than simply being a monster from a bedtime story, Buto Ijo is presented as a more realistic, mysterious, and meaningful symbol of terror. It's no wonder that from the moment its first trailer was released, the film immediately piqued audiences' curiosity. South Korea is back with a fresh supernatural action and fantasy film, titled HI-FIVE. This film has become one of the most anticipated releases due to its unique premise: supernatural powers emerging after an organ transplant. The story highlights not only fights and comedy, but also explores moral conflicts and friendship.
Director Kang Hyung-Chul presents an original story full of surprises, combining action with sci-fi elements and humor typical of Korean films. After a two-year delay due to a scandal involving one of its cast members, the project has also attracted attention due to the appearance of Park Jin-Young in his first antagonist role. With a running time of 119 minutes, the film is expected to take audiences on an unexpected adventure filled with laughter and suspense.
HI-FIVE Film Synopsis
After receiving organ transplants, several people experience strange changes in their bodies. They are Wan-seo (Lee Jae-in), who suddenly possesses extraordinary powers; Park Ji-sung (Ahn Jae-hong), who can generate powerful winds; Ki-dong (Yoo Ah-in), who can hack computers with a snap of his fingers; Yak-soo (Kim Hee-won), who possesses healing abilities; and Sun-nyeo (Ra Mi-ran), whose hidden abilities are still unknown.
Unfortunately, the other recipient is a cult leader named Park Young-chun (Shin Gu), who aspires to become a god. When he regains his youth (Park Jin-young), he attempts to take the powers of the other recipients.
Before watching the film, let's get to know the characters in Hi-Five and their superpowers.
1. Park Wan-seo (Lee Jae-in)
Park Wan-seo receives a heart transplant. This gives him incredible physical strength and superhuman speed, befitting his background as a Taekwondo enthusiast. He can leap great heights and knock out enemies with a single punch.
2. Park Ji-seong (Ahn Jae-hong)
Park Ji-seong received a lung transplant. His superpower is holding his breath for an extremely long time and generating super-strong gusts of wind. He can blow motorcycles and other heavy objects away with just one breath.
3. Kim Sun-nyeo (Ra Mi-ran)
Kim Sun-nyeo received a kidney transplant, which gives him the ability to absorb and transfer energy or power from others simply by touching them. He can take on the superpowers of his teammates, such as increased strength and speed, or the ability to heal.
4. Huh Yak-sun (Kim Hee-won)
Huh Yak-sun received a liver transplant. He has the superpower of rapid healing. Yak-sun can treat severe injuries in others. One scene in the trailer shows him healing his coworkers at the factory.
5. Hwang Ki-dong (Yoo Ah-in)
Hwang Ki-dong received a cornea transplant. This gives him the superpower of seeing and controlling electromagnetic waves. He can use his abilities to manipulate electronic devices like slot machines.

Seo Young-chun received a pancreas transplant. His superpower is to absorb life energy from others to prolong his life and make him younger. He uses this power to hunt down the Hi-Five team in order to unite all their powers to become stronger and immortal.
Superhero stories are not a new genre for South Korean filmmakers. However, HI-FIVE offers a story with a light plot and is filled with humor. This film is a refreshing watch and perfect for those who might be bored by the onslaught of "dark and serious" action films.
I was quite surprised by Yoo Ah-in's appearance as Ki-dong, considering that he wasn't shown at all in the promotional trailer. FYI, actor Yoo Ah-in is currently serving time after being charged with drug abuse. Fortunately, scenes featuring Ki-dong weren't completely cut.
The action scenes and visual effects are also very promising! The choice of score also makes this film enjoyable, sometimes making the audience want to sing along and dance along. The various dialogues and humorous scenes also feel natural and not forced.
One of the reasons I love South Korean films is the humanistic and realistic aspects they portray, such as the issue of religious sects that are very prevalent in South Korea, and the way Korean pop culture is a part of everyday conversation.
Although the genre is action and comedy, HI-FIVE is not recommended for children under 13 due to the many violent scenes in the film.
