The beginning of 2026 was an exciting time for Indonesian horror film fans. Several Indonesian filmmakers presented new works that didn't rely solely on jump scares but also adapted local stories with a fresh approach. One title that caught the attention was Penunggu Rumah: Buto Ijo, a horror film inspired by the Timun Mas folk legend, with a modern twist and a dark, oppressive atmosphere. Depicting the figure of Buto Ijo, a familiar figure from childhood fairy tales, this film seeks to break that classic image. Rather than simply being a monster from a bedtime story, Buto Ijo is presented as a more realistic, mysterious, and meaningful symbol of terror. It's no wonder that from the moment its first trailer was released, the film immediately piqued audiences' curiosity. The horror movie Kuasa Gelap released its latest poster and teaser trailer on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. The movie, directed by Bobby Prasetyo, is based on a true story and brings an exorcism theme that is rarely brought to the Indonesian big screen. It is the latest offering from Paragon Pictures and Ideosource Entertainment.
The horror movie Kuasa Gelap also features a number of well-known actors and actresses such as Lukman Sardi, Jerome Kurnia, Astrid Tiar, Lea Ciarachel, Freya JKT48 and Delia Husein. The film is produced by Robert Ronny, Andi Boediman, Pandu Birantoro and Arvin Sutedja. Kuasa Gelap tells the story of an exorcism ritual in a Catholic church experienced by its congregation. According to an upload on Instagram @paragonpictures.id on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, it was stated that only 10 percent of the 100 percent of reported possession cases require an exorcism ritual.
"90% of possession cases reported to the Catholic Church are mental problems," wrote the account upload. Therefore, this film attempts to show the reality of exorcism rituals based on real cases that occurred in Indonesia.
The film's producer, Robert Ronny, revealed his longtime dream to see an Indonesian horror film with a Catholic exorcism theme. "Ever since I saw The Exorcist, I have been dreaming of seeing an Indonesian horror film with a Catholic exorcism theme," Ronny said, as quoted in a written statement on Tuesday. The director, who won the Citra Award for Best Original Screenplay, also said he had done extensive research and attended exorcism workshops with Catholic priests who are recognized by the Vatican as exorcists. "We have the full support of the Indonesian Catholic Church," Ronny continued. He hopes that Kuasa Gelap will make the Indonesian horror genre richer and more relevant.
Director Bobby Prasetyo then added, "We have created a gripping and authentic atmosphere through the real experience of exorcism in Indonesia". He believes that this film will provide audiences with a new and exciting horror experience. Ideosource Entertainment's Executive Producer, Andi Boediman, also stated that the movie not only shows the horror, but also explores the human side of real cases of exorcism. "We hope audiences will feel the emotional depth and realism in this film," said Andi.
Kuasa Gelap Movie Synopsis
Kuasa Gelap tells the story of a young priest who doubts his faith, but is forced to perform an exorcism on a woman named Kayla, played by Lea Ciarachel. An exorcism is a process of casting out demons in Catholicism. However, it seems that the exorcism process on Kayla reminds the priest of his dead sister. Kayla's case is also more serious than it appears. Her mother, Maya, played by Astrid Tiar, is suspected of having a dark past and contributing to this case of demonic possession.
The story was inspired by the real-life experiences of an exorcism priest in Central Java. Prior to filming, the production team conducted extensive research, including consultations with priests, attending an exorcism seminar in Pontianak, and studying the ritual in Solo. Kuasa Gelapap is ready to bring a new color to Indonesian horror cinema. Watch it in theaters from October 3, 2024.
