Adventurous fantasy cinema seems to be getting noisier this year. A series of world production houses are competing to make films that take family themes or stories of avonturism in a fictional world. One of them is Paramount Pictures, which is scheduled to release the film IF (Imaginary Friends) on May 17, 2024.
IF will explore the themes of friendship, imagination, and loss in a unique and heartfelt way. That is, through the point of view of the main persona who learns to face his past, and struggles to find a way to balance between reality and the world of imagination.
Directed by John Krasinski, the movie follows the story of a girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming). Bea is a teenager who has had a traumatic experience and can see her imaginary friends again, even though in reality she is starting to grow up.
The imaginary friends were once a source of happiness and imagination for Bea, who is now a reminder of her dark past. However, at the same time, Bea is also able to see other people's imaginary friends who have begun to be forgotten as they grow up.
This moment brings Bea together with Cal (Ryan Reynolds) who in fact also has the same ability to see other people's imaginary friends. The two of them then carry out a mission so that they want to take care of, or keep their favorite toys in their childhood again that often transform into imaginary friends.
In the last IF trailer released by Paramount Pictures on April 11, 2024, this moment is reflected when Bea meets Cal. The two then enter a world of imagination where they can talk to various types of toys that always accompanied the characters in this movie when they were children.
In the 2-minute 18-second video trailer, John is also inspired by many popular children's films. Such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This is evident in the nostalgic feel and fantasy elements found in IF, some of which take place in settings similar to those movies.
Krasinski also manages to combine classic elements with a modern touch in this movie. IF presents a story that is almost experienced by most children in the world through heartfelt visuals and interesting packaging. The film also carries a deep message that can be enjoyed by all ages.
“Imaginary friends are not just adorable creations, they are time capsules for our hopes, dreams and ambitions. I want people to leave this movie believing in something bigger and something beautiful. It's very real and very possible,” Krasinski said at CinemaCon.
Uniquely, Steve Carell, who worked with Krasinski in The Office (2005-2013), is collaborating again in this movie. Carell will voice one of Bea's imaginary friend characters, Blue, who is expected to bring a sense of nostalgia and humor to the film, which features the family drama comedy.
In addition to Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, and Steve Carell, the movie also features a lineup of other famous stars. Emily Blunt voices the Unicorn character, Matt Damon voices the Flower character, Maya Rudolph voices the Alligator character, and John Krasinski himself voices Bea's father.
