Entertainment giant Warner Bros is reportedly preparing a new Gremlins movie. The American comedy horror franchise was first released in 1984, and the sequel came in 1990. Now, the third series of Gremlins is rumored to be released in late 2025, more than 3 decades since the last film.
The latest work on the reptilian monster will again be done by Christopher Columbus, the original writer of the franchise. Reporting from Nerdist, Warner Bros' new focus on nostalgic works is in line with the current industry trend of reviving classic films.
Not only Gremlins 3, Nerdist also noted that Warner Bros. this year is also working on a sequel to The Goonies, another iconic film from the same decade. This strategic move aims to attract new audiences and bring back audiences of the era to reminisce.
However, The Direct reports that Christopher Columbus has indicated that Gremlins 3 will introduce several new characters. The new cast will complement the story of previous favorites like Billy Peltzer and Kate Beringer, played by Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates respectively.
The storyline of Gremlins 3 is predicted to continue the situation that occurred in Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). However, until this announcement was made, specific details about the plot were kept under wraps.
Nonetheless, fans responded enthusiastically upon hearing the news of Gremlins 3, especially given their long wait since the last movie in 1990. Social media was abuzz with fan-made posters and trailers reflecting their desire to see the reptilian Gremlins characters back on screen.
Meanwhile from CBR, this is not the first time Warner Bros has revived the Gremlins franchise in the last decade. In 2023, the series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwait debuted on streaming service Max.
The animated prequel series focused on young Sam Wing, the original owner of Gizmo, in the 1920s in Shanghai, East China. The prequel even reached a second season, retitled The Wild Batch, taking the characters to a different location, San Francisco.
A third Gremlins movie was also previously attempted by Warner Bros in the 2010s, still with Christopher as the writer. However, it did not come to fruition. The reason is that fans were disappointed, and are now eagerly awaiting the process of making it.
Christopher's involvement in Gremlins 3 is also interesting, as he was not previously involved in the 1990 theatrical sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch or the Gremlins animated series. However, the move is now being made by Warner Bros, which seems to be making it a priority to revive the franchise.
