The beginning of 2026 was an exciting time for Indonesian horror film fans. Several Indonesian filmmakers presented new works that didn't rely solely on jump scares but also adapted local stories with a fresh approach. One title that caught the attention was Penunggu Rumah: Buto Ijo, a horror film inspired by the Timun Mas folk legend, with a modern twist and a dark, oppressive atmosphere. Depicting the figure of Buto Ijo, a familiar figure from childhood fairy tales, this film seeks to break that classic image. Rather than simply being a monster from a bedtime story, Buto Ijo is presented as a more realistic, mysterious, and meaningful symbol of terror. It's no wonder that from the moment its first trailer was released, the film immediately piqued audiences' curiosity. Psychological horror films often blur the line between fear and curiosity, and Bryan Bertino's latest film, "Vicious," seems poised to maximize that potential for suspense.
Fanning, who has carved out a long career since her childhood role in "I Am Sam" (2001), continues to demonstrate her acting prowess in major projects such as "The Alienist" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." In "Vicious," she plays Polly—a woman whose life changes completely after receiving a mysterious delivery in the middle of the night. Here's the synopsis!
"Vicious" Synopsis
"Vicious" follows Polly. She receives a box delivered by a strange figure late at night. Inside the box is a strange instruction: place three objects—something needed, something hated, and something loved.
What seems like a strange game is the beginning of a nightmare that obscures reality. As reality begins to distort and memory becomes unreliable, Polly finds herself trapped in a stressful situation, faced with a series of impossible choices.
The horror she faces comes not only from the outside, but also from the darkness brewing within herself—a struggle that could determine her life and death, as well as the lives of those she once knew.
In addition to Dakota Fanning in the title role, “Vicious” also stars Kathryn Hunter, Mary McCormack, Rachel Blanchard, Devyn Nekoda, Klea Scott, and Emily Mitchell.
“Vicious” wrapped filming in May 2024 in Ottawa, Canada, and is produced by Atlas Independent, Paramount Players, and Unbroken Pictures. The film was originally planned for a theatrical release on August 8, 2025, but was later rescheduled for February 28, 2025. However, a drastic change in distribution strategy led Paramount to cancel the theatrical release. Instead, the film will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in September 2025, before arriving exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service on October 10, 2025.
